Beer, Wine, and Liquor of the Month: Our October Picks

October brings a welcome change of pace, with crisp days and cozy evenings. Here in Maine, the changing leaves make everything feel even more special, giving us plenty of reasons to slow down and savor the season.

Whether you’re picking up a bottle to bring to a casual get-together or simply looking for something new to pour at home, these picks were made for sampling the flavors of fall.

This month we’re featuring a gorgeous red ale, a Cabernet Sauvignon that hails from California, and a vodka inspired by the flavors of a pumpkin pie.

October Beer, Wine, and Liquor of the Month

Atlantic Brewing’s Leaf-Peeping Ale is our October Beer of the Month. It’s an English-style red ale brewed with German noble hops to create a smooth session beer that has a mild sweetness on the finish. In addition to Pale and Caramunich malts, Atlantic uses 10% crystal malt to achieve the ruby red color—reminiscent of Maine fall foliage. 16 oz. 4-packs are available for $14.49.

Our October Wine of the Month is DeLoach Cabernet. This California Cabernet Sauvignon opens with bright aromas of blackberry, blackcurrant, and ripe plum, accented by subtle hints of cedar and baking spice. It’s medium-bodied and expressive on the palate, showcasing fresh dark fruit flavors layered with cocoa and a touch of vanilla. Silky tannins and balanced acidity lead to a smooth, refined finish, highlighting the pure expression of Lodi fruit and its classic regional character. Pick up a bottle for only $10.99.

Our October Liquor of the Month is Van Gogh Pumpkin Spice Vodka. Made with Van Gogh’s wheated vodka and real ground cinnamon and nutmeg, this 70-proof seasonal spirit is inspired by the warm flavors of pumpkin pie and baking spices and is perfect for autumn cocktails. Bottles are available for $26.99.

Cocktail of the Month

This month’s recipe is The Haunted Pumpkin, a creamy fall cocktail that feels a little like pumpkin pie crossed with an espresso martini.

The Haunted Pumpkin

Ingredients:

  • 1½ oz. vanilla vodka
  • 1 oz. Van Gogh Pumpkin
  • 1 oz. cold brew or espresso, chilled
  • ½ oz. coffee liqueur
  • ½ oz. heavy cream or half-and-half
  • Pinch of cinnamon

Instructions:

Fill a shaker with ice, then add all of the ingredients. Shake vigorously until everything is cold and frothy, then double strain into a coupe or martini glass. Finish by dusting half the top with cinnamon or pumpkin pie spice. Garnish it with a toasted marshmallow on a cocktail pick to give it a hint of drama.
